Project 2 Field Notes

Observations

1/18 7-8pm 2nd Floor

Walked in and there are absolutely no cardio machines open on the second floor (i.e. ellpitcals, stairmaster, bikes). From the looks of the times of the girls who have been on, there is maybe an average time of 20-30 minutes - few with an hour. Looking at their difficulty levels, it ranges from 3-8 elevation and 3-8 resistance - it seems they are pushing more toward burning calories than hardcore toning. There is a variation of loose t-shirts and tight workout pants/shorts - clear indication of who is in a sorority due to letters. It is obvious who is wearing makeup and who isn't - what's the point of that? You're only going to be sweating it off.. or at least you are suppose to. Looking at their faces, you can tell who is pushing hard and who isn't - determined by sweat and reddening of the face. Looking over toward the weights section, a girl is teaching another girl how  to workout the arms. Another is doing different variations between legs and arms - shows more experience. Looking back around, I'm noticing there are very few males using this cardio machines, at most 3. A consultant has walked by with a clipoard at least 2 times, makes me wonder what they are checking for. As I'm working out, it's interesting to see that there is a routine - lockers, rental towel, than to your area of workout.

1/24 3-4pm 1st Floor

Waiting in line for the towels, I notice how almost definite it is to tell who is apart of Greek life and who isn’t - it’s obvious when you see the Greek letters on shirts. It’s also easy to tell who comes in a lot and who doesn’t – determining the body type and the muscle structure. Lately, there haven’t been as many New Years resolutionaries coming in – finally. It just makes me wonder, why would you set a goal to get fit and give up barely after a month? Looking around the gym isn’t as packed as my normal time around 7 or 8, there’s still a fairly decent crowd. I’m noticing that there seem to be more athletic type people here at this time – assuming due to a fixed workout schedule incorporated with their sports schedule. That, or I’m assuming it’s because this is the only time they have to fit in a workout. I’ve come to realize though, that there will always be a stand out somewhere in the gym that catches your attention, and I don’t mean in a good way. Just now, I saw a girl wearing blue jean shorts and working out on the elliptical… why? It’s almost disturbing that some people choose not to where the appropriate athletic wear to the gym. Jean shorts don’t even sound comfortable to workout in. I’m sitting here now, watching the racket ball game going on inside one of the 3 cells that the Leach has – these guys are intense. They are putting full force into their hits and it strikes the wall so fast, returning back to them. I’ve played tennis before but the way they are playing so aggressively against a wall is scary.

1/27 5-6pm 1st Floor

I’ve been coming to the gym since fall semester but I never took the time to actually observe people till now. I knew that grunting while doing weights was a thing, but I never thought how excessive it was till I took my headphones out and listened. Watching most of the guys lift, you see an obvious struggle with the shaking of their muscles or the tightening of their faces. The guy I’m watching right now but he has taken it to a whole other level. He is working on his biceps with one of the machines, lifting a weight around 120. Don’t get me wrong, he looks fit but the faces he is making, with how red he is turning and the sounds he is producing makes me question whether or not he is dying. He looks like he is facing off with the Devil for dear life. Which makes me wonder – why push to the point of hurting yourself? I understand wanting to increase in weight or endurance, but if you clearly cannot do certain things, you need to take the necessary steps to advancing your body. I feel like when people come in here, they are trying to show off their abilities and physique. I’m not one to complain but the point of a gym is to get work done and get out.

1/31 4-5 pm Third Floor

As I’m waiting for a mat to clear up, I’m watching all the different kinds of workouts people are doing. A couple of girls are working on their glutes, guys are doing ab work, and a couple people are stretching. Looking into the basketball court, there’s a game going on. It seems like a friendly game since the guys laugh and play around a bit. I wonder if they are practicing for IM or actually just having a fun game of basketball. Looking back at the mats, you can tell who is working hard and who isn’t. There are two guys doing an extremely difficult variation of abs, with constant movement of the body, and you can clearly see the struggle on their faces. Than looking a couple mats over there’s a girl doing abs but in more static zone, working slow through her movements but still struggling from the looks of the shaking in her legs and arms. The girls that I mentioned before doing glutes are now just kind of sitting there, trying to appear like they’re stretching but they aren’t. I’ve been eying them ever so often and they haven’t moved much since finishing their sets. Why go to the gym with friends if you know you aren't going to be getting much done?

2/5 8:30-9pm 2nd Floor

The gym isn’t as crowded as it usually is. There are actually cardio machines and weights open. There doesn’t seem to be anyone really doing any cardio around this time, a fair few, but mostly everyone is doing weights. There is a higher guy to girl ratio here at this time, almost all of them doing weights. They don’t seem to be in groups either – almost everyone seems to be by themselves working out. The atmosphere seems to be a little more focused than usual, considering such a smaller crowd of people and more available space. I took the time to notice that the music playing isn’t anything particularly motivating. It sounds like car music and doesn’t have a certain tempo for working out. The thing that gets to me is why there aren’t very many people here as compared to like a Monday night? Also, does anyone really buy anything from the little snack shop next to the rental desk? Why do they have a TV center at the Leach Center anyways?

2/15 12-1 PM 1st Floor

There is an active atmosphere and good energy today. The consultants are more active with individuals who ask for preferences on working out. Looking around, there is more cardio than anything going on right now. Specifically on the treadmills, they are all filled for once. I see a bunch of sweaty girls leaving from the cardio room, I’m assuming from a spinning class. They look exhausted but they look in good spirits, except one. There is a girl that just left the cardio room and she looks like she just survived death. She is extremely red in the face, breathing heavy, and walking awkwardly slow. She is clearly exhausted and dehydrated, and just headed to the water fountain. Looking at her drinking, she seems to be eternally greatly for water. This guy just walked by and he looks like he just came out of a body builder’s magazine. He is ripped and wearing a cut up tank, clearly showing his defined muscles. He is lifting heavy free weights and doesn’t appear to be struggling as most other guys.

1/18 Reflection

It's always irritating when the gym is completely packed, the only downside aspect of the Leach. I do appreciate that different kinds of people from FSU come in to better themselves through fitness, regardless of their own individual motivations to be there. There is a clear distinction of Greek and non-greek life in the gym, showing the cultural diversity of the campus itself. Also, looking at the logos on the t-shirts, you get a ceratin inlook to the life of that individual person. Whether they are in a sorority, fraternity, or apart of SGA, you get to see their involvement or lack their of in FSU. Aside from clothing, you can determine someone's dedication and persistence in the gym - body type and muscle structure. It's obvious when someone has been working out and just started, harsh but cruel. With that also comes experience. You can see who knows what they are doing and who is doing the bare minimum, especially when one person is teaching another. Another thing to mention is the makeup and clothing aspect of women. Those who wear tons of makeup and tight clothing says a lot about a personality than most. Found out that the consultants walking around are actually only walking around to make sure people are using the gym equipment properly and to suggest critiques for those interested.

1/24 Reflection

There is a definite change with who comes in and who doesn't come in. At the beginning of the month, there was motivation from everyone coming in and slowly the crowd got smaller to the average size as last fall. This may be due to lack of motivation or personal issues, I may not ever know. Talking with the consultants, they have said that many of the athletes attend their own personal gyms but the ones that do attend the Leach do tend to come at this time. The reason being due to their classes and already set workout schedule with their sport. That or it was already a routine schedule for them. After doing interviews, it would seem that people do wear the appropriate gym clothes but it still amazes me that some people don't know what to wear. It is unacceptable to wear board shorts, jean shorts, vans, etc. to the gym. There is a reason workout clothes were made, they help your movements versus being stiff while working out. There is a science behind beind fit and working out properly, people shouldn't take this very lightly. It turns out that the guys I had observed in the racketball room were practicing for an upcoming match they had scheduled. They have been playing for years now and though they do it recreationally, it is an important sport to them and they dedicate themselves completely.

1/27 Reflection

Everyone has their own style for doing their own thing, it what makes them an individual. Their similarities though make them a culture. The people that come in the Leach Center have their own ways of working out and whether that be through releasing grunts or just sweating it out, they make it their own unique experience. A strong factor though that I've come to notice is the confidence people have to even come to the gym. It takes a lot for someone to dedicate time to bettering themselves through fitness. The only downside though is not asking for help when it is needed. It's a sense of pride you feel when someone doesn't take criticism on their workout when all someone is doing is trying to help them improve. The gym is where you come to evolve.

1/31 Reflection

Everyone has their own way of doing things and if gets the job done than so be it. The best thing I've noticed is the cultural aspect of determinance when people come in. Though some do come in and don't do as much as they should be, it's the fact of getting there and trying that matters. Yet, there will always be those fair few that slack off when they know better. It's just like school work though, you procrastinate because you don't want to go through the pain of doing it. I found out that the guys on the basketball courts are actually just regulars, only some of them play for IM sports, those being in fraternities mainly. Not everyone has to come to the Leach Center and do an all intensive workout through lifting weights or hard cardio, even recreational sports can do it for them. It just goes to show the difference cultural preferences people have as a gym - there will be diversity. There will be those that run, walk, jog, climb stairs, lift weights, and so on, and still be able to achieve their fitness goals.

2/5 Reflection

It's interesting to notice that the time of day can change the motivations of some people to go to the gym. This can be due to energy levels, or strict workout times, and so on. It's still very funny how the gym is so male dominated. Another thing I notice particularily at this time of day is the fact of self-motivation versus group motivation. There was barely anyone there with another person, they were all just completely zoned into their music and their workouts. If it were I, I would do the same thing. Especially, considering that the music provided by the gym has no rhymatic functioning for working out. There is no distintic and repeatitive beat of which to follow with a work out. I found out that there aren't very many people coming in at this time due to it already being late as it is, but they being drinking events such as Wine Down at Mint. I have yet to see anyone buy anything from that little shop but taking a look they do sell protein bars and supplements which is good. And from what I was told, the TV center is there for down town after a work out.

2/15 Reflection

I must say that it is interesting to note the activity going on at the gym around lunch time. So many people came in looking energized and prepared to work out. It could be from the starting of their day or that this time is truly when you have the most energy. I am assuming so comnsidering that there were mainly only cardio machines going at the time and classes were just letting out. I found it amuzing how you can tell the athletic ability of someone after seeing their reactions to working out. The girl I had observed clearly hadn't been in the best physical shape due to her extreme exhaustion written all over her body. Opposite, the male I observed seemed perfectly able for any workout and it is clear he has been working out for a long time. He is resistant to the exhaustions you get when you are first starting out.

Q. What time do you go to the gym and why?

"I ususally end up going to the gym around 2 or 3, mainly because I have early classes and I like getting everything done and out of the way."

                                       - Zack Shimley, Senior

"I wake up late and have afternoon classes so I normally go to the gym at night. I would say around, like, 7."

                         - Elizabeth Taylor, Sophomore

"I don't really have a set time when I go, honestly. It's whenever I can get the chance to. The mornings are pretty dead, which is pretty straight. It gets pretty packed though after 3 or 4, with all the neebs coming in."

                           - Lucas Sanchez, Sophomore

Q. What are your main goals when you decide to go to the gym?

"Obviously, to get in shape. I always make the same new years resolutions and this time I'm trying to take it seriously. I mainly just want to get in shape and have a banging body for spring break."

                                - Gabi Giuliano, Freshman

"My main goal is to maintain my weight and stay strong for competition. Cheering is a hard sport and I have to constantly stay in perfect health to keep on point. "

                                  - Britni Cohen, Freshman

"I'm trying to compete for a bikini contest, so for me getting in shape is the goal. I need to be thin and tone if I want any chance of getting a title and that's what keeps me going."

                                 - Zoie Burgher, Freshman

"Honestly, I just want to get my ass looking good. I see all these pictures of fit girls and their amazing bodies, and all I want is to be that girl. I want to be able to take sexy pictures and brag about how I worked for it."

                         - Gianna Gallego, Sophomore

"I mean come on, it's cutting season. This is the time to get in shape for spring break. The goal is to get shredded to drink all you want and to pull."

                             - Giancarlo Troia, Freshman

"My goal is to get big always. There's nothing wrong with improvements and lifting more, and more weight everytime I go is an awesome feeling."

                                       - Mike Giuliano, Junior

Q. What do you typically wear to the gym?

"Usually just a man tank with basketball shorts."

                                 - Cameron Chung, Senior

"I love wearing my Lululemon. They always have the cutest tops that match the color of the bras or like the lining on the spanx."

                       - Kirsten Burroughs, Freshman

"I don't know, like loose t-shirts with basketball shorts. Nothing too heavy, or whatever."

                                      - Sam Escamilla, Junior

"The usual, just sorority shirts that I have with some spanx or yoga pants to match."

                                     - Alice Palay, Freshman

"I know it sounds kind of cocky but I actually like to show off my curves. I'll wear like tight nike shorts with a sports bra and small, loose tank top. Just enough to show and to get guys attention."

                               - Maria Galati, Sophomore

Q. Do you prefer going with friends or by yourself, and why?

"I usually just go to the gym by myself. Whenever I go with my friends, I don't feel like I'm getting anything done because we end up talking, and just get distracted from actually getting something done."

                              - Phoenix Catao, Freshman

"It's just kind of weird going by myself, I always try to go with one of my friends. I don't know, I just feel weird."
                         - Casey Mancuso, Sophomore

"Nah, I hit the gym with my brothers. They keep me motivated and it's a chill thing."

                                         - James Green, Junior

After completing observations made at the Leach Center, it was interesting to see the different social aspects that accompany the space. The culture built within the Leach Center is a dynamic and determined mindset of people wishing to better themselves in their physical constraints. It is a place to become one within yourself and to evolve from your current state. Whether that is for the physical or mental.

They say that working out helps boost the endorphins of which bring our bodies ease and relief that accompanies happiness. Regardless of the science behind it, there are the different motivations as to why every member continues to go. From my current research there were varied reasons to attend the gym – stay in shape, get in shape, improve health, improve in weight, and so. It was particularly interesting to note that most of the people I had interviewed had one goal in mind – spring break. If one week during the spring semester is their motivation to go to the gym, so be it. It speaks clearly of their athletic ability as opposed to those who come to stay in shape for sports, or those getting back into shape for a competition of sorts. Overall, it’s not the reason that determines the culture of Leach Center, it’s the act and endurance to go.

Another thing I did learn about this culture is how male dominated it is. Though you see a good amount of females in the building, if you were to put them into two groups, males would win - it isn’t necessarily a dominance issue.

It’s been said before that clothing speaks a lot about a person and for this project I would have to agree. The titles on the shirts people would wear sharing their involvement in Greek life or SGA, etc., shows an insight to the interests of the members in this culture. It shows that far past just coming to the gym, they have other dedications, an aspect to be appreciated here at FSU. I feel like it says a lot about the student body in general. It shows that students are able to maintain academics will still being involved with organizations and balancing their health. It shows for good time-management and a great set of goals they have in mind. It’s especially interesting when you see the people from the gym outside of FSU itself. You see them involved in the overall Tallahassee community, contributing as a true citizen of society. I can’t tell you how many of the people I’ve seen leave that gym and take on a roll in IFC, or become involved as an intern at the capital. The determined seen from the culture of a gym can reach far past the doors of the entrance and out into the actually community of Tallahassee.

Thus going back, I’ve come to realize that place and culture go one in the same with each other. A place gives opportunities and it is the people that take those opportunities and develop them into a culture. The culture links directing from the resources made available, but it is the culture itself that identifies the place.

Interviews

Survey

Q. How often do you go to the gym?

"I try to go everyday, I'm pretty good about it. It's like a routine thing for me now. When I don't go I just feel really lazy."

                                                        - Evan Boone, Senior

"I want to say I go everyday but that usually doesn't happen. Especially on the weekends after a night of partying. I really only go during the week and even than I can get pretty lazy. I think it really just depends if I'm into that day."

                                                     - Ali Levine, Freshman

"As an athlete, I have to go everyday. I have to have my body in perfect condition when it comes to game day. I owe it to the team and I owe to myself to be in the best shape possible to reach the ultimate goal - winning the title."

                                               - Quint Bodine, Freshman

"I recently just started going to the gym more, so probablt around 4 or 5 times a week now. I'm really trying to dedicate myself to a healthier lifestyle and trying to be able to run a couple 5ks in the future."

                                                                                               - Ashley Ward, Freshman

Q. What is an aspect that bothers you while at the gym. and why?

"I think really the only thing is how crowded it can get. Like there are a lot of machines and weights but sometimes you have to wait for someone to finish their sets, and it just gets annoying."

                                                                                                     - Mike Age, Freshman

"What really bothers me is when someone is using a machine and have no idea what they are doing. Like, read the instructions or ask someone how to do it. You're wasting time and are probably going to hurt yourself, just stop."

                                                                                     - Kirsten Burroughs, Freshman

"I think it's really irritating when you see groups of people go to the gym but they aren't really doing anything. You'll see some people just hanging out on the mats upstairs or just sitting on the couches. Like why are you here?"

                                         - Nina Laureano, Sophomore

Q. When did you start attending the Leach Center, and why?

"I want to say I started when fall semester hit. I never had a gym membership or anything in highschool so the fact that FSU offered it was amazing. I really just started going to get fit, really trying to avoid the freshman 15."

                                                   - Alice Palay, Freshman

"Started coming here my freshman year, didn't want to really pay for a gym when FSU had one for free. I've always been into fitness and I go to stay fit, and healthy."

                                           - Shane Morris, Sophomore

"I've been going to the gym since middle school, so when I started here I went to the Leach. I go to stay in shape and top health for sports. I'm on the baseball team and it's important I stay strong for on and off the field."

                                              - Quint Bodine, Freshman

Q. Do you listen to music when you workout? Why or why not?'

"Are you serious? Who doesn't listen to music when they workout? It gets me pumped. Especially when its got a killer beat."

                                                  - Tom Ciaverella, Senior

"It just depends, when I go with the guys there's not a point since we talk or whatever, but when I'm by myself yeah I have my music."

                                              - Austin O'Mahony, Senior

"I have a playlist for when I go to the gym. The music matches the tempo of how hard I'm working, like when I run or I'm on the stairmaster. I keeps me pushing through the workout."

                                          - Adrianne Diaz, Sophomore
